If you\u2019re unhappy with the appearance of a tooth, you may have heard about both veneers and dental crowns<\/a>. While these treatments can both improve the look of your smile, they serve different purposes. So, how do you know which one is right for you? The answer depends largely on the health of your tooth, your cosmetic goals, and how much structural support it needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Are Veneers the Better Choice?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Veneers are thin shells, typically made from porcelain, that are bonded to the front surface of a tooth. They\u2019re primarily considered a cosmetic treatment and can be an excellent option for teeth that are generally healthy but have minor imperfections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, veneers can help conceal discoloration that doesn\u2019t respond well to whitening, small chips, minor cracks, gaps, or slightly uneven or misshapen teeth. Because veneers cover only the visible front portion of the tooth, they generally require less removal of natural tooth structure than crowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another advantage is their versatility. A carefully planned set of veneers can address several cosmetic concerns at once, helping create a more uniform, balanced smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, veneers aren\u2019t usually the best choice for teeth that are significantly weakened or damaged. And although veneers can technically be placed on molars and other back teeth, this generally isn\u2019t recommended. Back teeth absorb substantial forces when you chew, which can make veneers less suitable for these high-pressure areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Are Dental Crowns Preferred?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unlike veneers, crowns cover the entire visible portion of a tooth. They\u2019re designed to restore both the appearance and function of teeth that have been substantially damaged or weakened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your dentist may recommend a crown for a tooth with extensive decay, a large filling, a significant crack, or damage following a root canal. Crowns can also be used to restore worn or broken teeth and protect them from additional damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crowns are particularly useful for molars because these teeth experience considerable pressure during chewing. A full-coverage crown provides the strength and protection needed to withstand those forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crowns can also look remarkably natural. Tooth-colored materials, including porcelain, can be carefully matched to surrounding teeth, allowing restorative treatment to blend beautifully with your smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About Cost and Insurance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cost is another factor to discuss before choosing between veneers and crowns. Veneers are generally considered cosmetic, so dental insurance typically does not cover them. Crowns, on the other hand, are often used for restorative purposes and may receive partial insurance coverage when they\u2019re medically necessary. Coverage varies by plan, so it\u2019s always worth checking your benefits before beginning treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
